John advises insurance and reinsurance companies, as well as intermediaries, on all aspects of their business including M&A transactions, portfolio transfers, restructurings, contractual negotiations and regulatory matters. He also has extensive experience in helping insurance and reinsurance companies obtain authorisation from the Central Bank of Ireland and on passporting into other EEA markets.
He also advises companies and boards on complex and sensitive regulatory issues.
Recent significant transactions include advising:
- Phoenix Group on the Irish law aspects of the acquisition of Standard Life Aberdeen’s insurance arm
- Groups such as Beazley and Chaucer on the authorisation of the respective Irish insurance companies
- Various unnamed clients on sensitive regulatory matters arising out of skilled persons reports undertaken by the Central Bank of Ireland
- Various clients on Solvency II related issues including admissibility and categorisation of own-fund and ancillary own-fund items, third country reinsurance arrangements and outsourcing
John is a member of the IBA Insurance Committee and is a former Chairman of the Insurance Regulation Sub-Committee. He is also a former Chairman of An Taoiseach’s IFSC Insurance Group.
He is the only Solicitor in Ireland to win the International Law Office Client Choice Award in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for his work in the insurance sector.
